What is a post-operative lymphatic drainage massage?

Fat is an active, living tissue that contains lymphatic vessels and blood vessels. When fat cells are  removed during a liposuction procedure, connective tissue, cells and vessels are damaged. During the healing process, excess fluid accumulates in certain areas and pockets where fat used to be. Over time this Lymph fluid becomes hard and fibrous, creating discomfort during recovery.

A typical massage focuses on your muscles, whereas a lymphatic drainage massage uses a gentle massage technique that increases blood flow to help promote recovery by targeting the lymphatic system. This system is responsible for processing waste and absorbing fluids in the body. Massage therapy after a liposuction procedure helps to break down those hardened fluids and elements to create lymphatic drainage, while simultaneously decreasing inflammation, leaving you with the comfort you deserve during your recovery.

How does a lymphatic massage work?

During the early stages following a liposuction procedure, most patients will experience swelling, bruising and discomfort. Manual lymphatic drainage can be achieved with this specialized massage technique. It can facilitate the healing process by increasing circulation and the flow to the lymphatic vessels. In turn, this reduces swelling and lowers the risk of infection. Lymphatic massage treatments can also release any trapped blood cells which can drastically decrease bruising. By reducing inflammation and bruising, patients may be able to visibly see the results of their liposuction procedure sooner. If you have had our enhanced liposuction and fat transfer with BeautiFill or the Evolve non-invasive body contouring treatment, a post procedure massage is essential to enhance your results and experience.

How many sessions do I need?

It is recommended during the first week that sessions are daily or every other day if possible. During the second week, every other day and slowly weaning down after that. Each session is about one hour, although those who have more extensive procedures or have had multiple procedures at the same time may prefer our 90 minute session.

Why do I feel bumps and lumps on my body?

The uneven lumps and bumps you may feel below the surface of your skin are known as fibrosis. Fibrosis is an accumulation of detached fat. This is a very common and normal symptom after receiving a liposuction procedure. During the healing process, excess fluid builds up in certain areas where fat used to be. Over time this fluid becomes hard and fibrous. This happens anywhere from 5-21 days following the procedure. After a lipo suction massage, these fibrosis bumps and lumps will start to smooth themselves out evenly in your body.

How long do I wear my compression garment?

Compression garments are beneficial following liposuction procedures. A compression garment, sleeve, or stockings are often recommended to help with tissue remodeling and to minimize swelling. Garments are to be worn for a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks following your liposuction procedure. It is crucial to continuously wear your compression garment to hold everything in place and provide longevity to your results.
